Avant-Garde Learning Foundation was founded in early 2005 as a nonprofit corporation by Dr. Shirley Holloway, the former Alaska State Commissioner of Education and Early Development. Our work is fueled by the passion of our dedicated board of directors and our hard-working staff.

 

Children in Alaska face unique geographic, economic and cultural challenges. Avant-Garde is committed to partnering with universities and colleges, school districts, business, tribal organizations, and communities to transform education and ensure our young people have the opportunity for bright, successful futures.

 

Our current initiatives include:

• Alaska Native Teacher Initiative to increase the number of Native teachers in rural Alaska and improve Alaska’s ability to recruit, graduate and retain our own teachers.
• Skills Alaska Program, which aims to improve student learning and academic success in Alaska’s K-12 schools.
• Alignment Project to investigate and address the issue of student preparedness in Alaska.
• Science Initiative focused on improving the quality of science education – and overall student performance – in Alaska schools.
